Jorge Rendon's novel depicts the turbulent 50's in Lima
Rendon Jorge Vasquez, a respected professor of law, is also a prolific writer, author of several books of short stories. now surprises us with a vast novel. Poet and literary critic Rosa Luz Miranda, gives his authoritative commentary on this vision of this book.
He writes: Rosa Luz Miranda
After their successful stories New Street, The Neck of the Snake and Celebration, Jorge Vásquez Rendón, has just published the novel dense spoils of the Good Death.
This time is an accomplished literary work, which has to mind the government of General Odria and shows the contingencies of the time: the military coup always present in our latitudes. With this issue our very accomplished writer paints a fresco of the fifties, working with accurate and detailed strokes, the product of a thorough investigation.
Jorge Rendon enters the universe of fullness of the historical novel. Our author is a protagonist of the events he describes, an actor in the scene of the student strength, which has the urge to make reforms to reach the people and their eagerness claiming ownership. So much so that its editors stress that "His thoughts and his pen traveled extensively and tirelessly for space law, often opening the way with energy after the weeds away. As a result of this is his return to the literature provided with the experience in many years of watching the actors in the simple and extraordinary events that shape the human evolution. "
Through its 490 pages the author, who has lived that time, claims a vertical society and corrupt, nothing auspicious grounded in our history of domination by the traditional power groups, this time the landowning oligarchy. Kleptocracy, always fertile ground, generates its pest capable of destroying the most solid foundation of what should be the country that claims to build. Its always subtle ways lead to erosion and loss of values. Of these elements nourish your creative thinking, and manages, with the accuracy of historical facts and credibility of others, rescue the reader of historical memory.
The work is divided into three chapters or episodes. The first, puppets spree, wrapped in an errant andantino music, shows us the life of a social stratum which enjoys the necessary laws are always issued in his favor. The second, Deeds, not words, ma non troppo Allegro is the motto of a time that begins symbolically with the number 8, and refers to the known ochenio of the dictatorship of General Odria. Is there the presence of the people, the defining ideology of the thinking class, highlighting the epic of the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos, San Agustin of Arequipa and Cuzco University. In between these events, intrigues, love affairs, prisons for "political crimes" and other unfortunate events, it tells the incredible theft of state coffers $ 20 million at that time.
In the third chapter, entitled Dialectic Pura, Allegro molto vivace, the theft is discovered and revealed by a command of university students in Lima square of the Good Death. What follows is typical for authoritarian regimes: the persecution, imprisonment, institutionalized torture, deportation and coercion of freedom.
In language plain and linear style, the novelist deploys its design, structure and layout, where clarity and precision are constant. The construction plans overlaid with conflicting equivalences in the characterization of characters.
The time describing Jorge Rendon covers the years ranging from 1948 to 1954. That is, a dramatic period in our history. It is the agonizing period in which the presidential term from José Luis Bustamante y Rivero, and enthroned the dictatorship of General Manuel Odria. In this process, the political landscape involves institutions and movements that conflict with the breakdown of constitutional order. These are the Apra collective actors, communists, socialists and the military. Our author applies a precise logic in developing the storyline of adverse events.
The ideal novel involves the prospective vision of the country that we all want to have. That country will be built with the questioning and the rescue of our past. Aptly our novelist inserted a fragment of the Prelude to the optimism of Arequipa Guillermo Mercado, with "Why not ... if we spread our tenderness over the stones / to the bare feet of hope ..." Inserts also strong statements of Don Quixote: "... They are giants, and if you are afraid, get out of there ... I'm going to engage them in fierce and unequal battle. "
Our country should not allow the abuse of power enthroned in the segments that build society. The spoils of the Good Death is a novel complaint that a dictatorial government keeps the records aided imprisonment, torture and deportation, while a disorganized society guardianship for the benefit of the ruling classes.
Rendon is here severely goal. It has taken away from the facts and ignored the passion. His achieves balance methodological rigor demanded by the direct flow of history. It is a letting the story unfolds directly without disturbing it. Multiple values come together in this work. We note only as a stroke educational value, especially for young people, who rescued this memory of a leafy tree roots of our problems.
